ABSTRACT

The Imperial Japanese Army suffered one of its greatest defeats in Burma. To a great extent, Burma was mainly an Indian Army theatre. However, the Indian Army’s activities have been written out of almost all the accounts of the Second World War in Burma. The aim here is not to provide a chronological narrative. The first section focuses on the China-Burma-India Theatre. It was the domain of the American and mainly Chinese forces. The second section portrays the training of the British and Indian troops in jungle warfare. The third section turns the focus on the jungle fighting in the hilly and coastal regions of Arakan. The fourth section turns the limelight on the sieges of Imphal-Kohima. And the last section deals with the Central Burma Sector. All the sections deal with the issue of lessons learnt by the British and Indian troops in the course of their combat with the Japanese.
