The critique of technocracy on the basis of ideas about the reaffirmation of subjectivity and commun­ ity has given rise to concepts which seek to transc­ end and, at times, to transgress, the prevailing order. In its more optimistic moods the Green Move­ ment has attempted to combine its utopian demands with specific proposals for alternatives in economic and social policies, whilst in its more despondent moods it has encouraged an atmosphere in which people resort to violence in their efforts to achieve 'liberation1.
