ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ways in which KoreAm constructs Korean America as a hybrid diaspora with meanings rooted in local experiences in the United States but that also draw on transnational symbols and connections from South Korea. It argues that KoreAm uses transnational symbols as resources to define Korean Americanness through identification and disidentification. The chapter considers Korean America in relationship to dominant culture through representations that simultaneously promote counter-hegemonic resistance and hegemonic integration. It assesses KoreAm using a hybrid diasporic approach because it recognizes that ethnic media produced in the diaspora's local context. In order to discover the hybrid diasporic meanings of KoreAm, the chapter examines three print issues and the stories published online through its official website between January and May 2015. According to its official website, KoreAm is dedicated to covering "the news of Korean America".
