ABSTRACT

Psychosocial interventions have been identified as accepted methods of treating symptoms of schizophrenia (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2014). However, mostly these interventions have focussed on positive symptoms (e.g. delusions and voices) as their primary target, with psychosocial interventions for negative symptoms receiving much less attention in research and developments in clinical practice (Elis et al., 2013) – especially for those who are hardest to reach. In this chapter we describe further developments in the application of the Shared Assessment Formulation and Education (SAFE; Meaden & Hacker, 2010) approach to working with people with negative symptoms of schizophrenia, paying particular attention to Team-Based Cognitive Therapy elements.
