ABSTRACT

Among the raw materials from which tombstones are constructed, four recurring types were readily distinguished, each with its own unique visual eect and texture:

1. cement – relatively rough-textured and grey, although it appears that at least sometimes it was white-washed;

2. limestone – often polished, producing a smooth white to beige surface; 3. Turkish marble – always polished, producing a highly lustrous pale blue to

greyish surface; 4. granite – always polished, producing a highly lustrous, dark grey to black

surface.
