Magi in the spread of Mithraism to the West. e Romans, as was customary, adopted the Parthian religion and incorporated Mithra-worship into their religious lifestyle. Mithraism rst sprang from the sacred cult of Mithra, elements of which began among Persian soldiers during the Achaemenian period,5 although at a later stage it was an esoteric-looking movement that was “mystied” – in connection with the Hellenized Magi – and popularized mainly among the Roman Legions in the West from the rst century until the fth century ce.
