ABSTRACT

This chapter critically examines the relationship between science, scientists, and science communication through the lens of the major environmental issue facing society, climate change. Many, if not all, of the issues are relevant to science communicators wherever they work. The long-term nature of the challenges thrown up by climate change means that developments in the relationship can be identifi ed and, as the subject will not ‘go away’ quickly, it allows opportunities for speculation about future trends and possibilities for science communication. Climate change is an issue that can provoke strong responses among experts as well as the lay public. Increasingly, as the story from the Times Higher Education above suggests, it is already an issue of life and death.
