ABSTRACT

An organization's structure, mission, values and policies can set the stage for how youth workers are able to serve young people. Organizational support can be resources youth workers have available to them, often in the form of funding, supplies, and other staff members, but it can also be access to information on youth medical conditions, difficult life experiences, and necessary accommodations. The organization offers training and a reasonable workload. The chapter introduces a dilemma that Katie, a camp counselor who confronted one-to-one work with a camper who had special needs. The Ecological Dilemma Resolution model is used to analyze Katie's dilemma. Upon reflection, Katie comes to see that what she was experiencing as an individual dilemma was actually an organizational tension. Youth workers are best able to respond to dilemmas if they have all possible tools at their disposal.
