ABSTRACT

This chapter challenges us to remember that the realm of psyche is older, broader, and deeper than we commonly imagine and that as psyche's realm manifests itself through dreams, myths, poems, art-such as the ancient Theran frescoes-and other creative works, archetypes are continually in the making. The contributors explore ancient and modern themes of initiation, trauma, gender, journey, homecoming, and love. The chapter describes a case study of Ariadne. Ariadne the woman of string, sleeping on the sand; sometimes she follows her own thread, begun from the beginning of women in caves; the unbroken thread, right down from the beginning of time. Ariadne and her seven sisters went travelling; they went and they created themselves; they found what lies beneath, they found what lies above; they learned to hold their liquor; they saw themselves in the face, they did not go up in flames; they went away; they came home; they came back with presents for all their friends.
