This chapter helps readers to select a scientific conference to present research and apply to present research at a conference. Scientific conferences, or meetings, range in size from large, international meetings of tens of thousands of attendees to small, regional, or departmental meetings that may have a few dozen attendees. The major presentation genres at scientific conferences are scientific posters, oral presentations, and workshops. Conference Abstracts are a short genre that summarizes research that is proposed for presentation at a scientific conference. Often the data presentation that is proposed in a Conference Abstract is part of ongoing research that may eventually be included in a journal article. However, the amount of data presented at a conference is less than what would be presented in a journal article. Many scientific conferences also specify that the research data proposed for presentation must not have been previously published in a journal article.
