ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines its theoretical framework, which is a combination of three strands of theories. One is the notion of news values', or the criteria used by media gatekeepers to determine if something is worthy of public attention. The second is the notion of Asian values', representing a cultural relativist position that the nations of East and Southeast Asia, distinct from their Western counterparts, subscribe to a value system whereby social harmony is prioritized. Finally, in order to explore the intersection of the two aforementioned notions, the chapter draws on the literature on media logics. The chapter discusses the steps taken to collect and analyze data to address the research question, the methodological rationale behind those steps, and the findings. It demonstrates the constructivist nature of media logics and the extent to which local values contribute to the construction and operation of such logics.
