ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the close relationship between the United States and Chile and sheds light on its future path. It describes the principles and objectives of Chile's foreign policy especially following the demise of the Coalition of Parties for Democracy (CPD) in 2010 in order to provide the backdrop to its relationship with the United States. The analysis also incorporates some of the most distinctive elements of US foreign policy with relation to Chile, especially under the Obama administration. The chapter outlines the primary milestones of the US Chile relationship during the same period and analyzes the key factors that have contributed to the consolidation of ties between both states. It evaluates the bilateral agenda between the two countries, including matters of trade, defense, and security. Finally, the chapter provides a series of conclusions about the US Chile relationship.
