ABSTRACT
The stanzaic, character, and narrative structures together make up the ballad architectonic. When considered together these structures provide an illuminating picture of the overall organization of an oral text. In addition to these major structures, however, there is yet another, minor, structure. This one, since it regulates the tone and emotional temperature of a ballad, we may call the tonal structure.
