ABSTRACT

The day after Barack Obama delivered his first inaugural address, Gallup was in the field asking citizens its trademark question: do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President? How does a citizen answer that question after a president has been on the job for only a day? Some must have been asking themselves that same question because one out of five respondents refused to say whether they approved or disapproved of how the president was doing. The rest evidently felt that they already had enough information to judge the president’s performance-85 percent of them said that they approved.
