ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the unique dynamics of the work-family interface occurring in Indonesia. The socioeconomic and cultural context of Indonesia and the summary of research on work and family issues in the country are provided in the beginning. Some sessions of focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted to find out: how often participants experienced work interference with family (WIF) and family interference with work (FIW), sources and outcomes of WIF and FIW, coping strategies applied to reduce Work-family conflict (WFC). To more comprehensively examine the antecedents and outcomes of WFC, Dr. Artiawati conducted a study with the Project 3535 data from Indonesia using the model proposed by Dr. Aycan, in which work and family support and work and family demands play a role as antecedents for WFC. In the family domain, coping strategies applied included asking for support from the extended family, a neighbor, a coworker, a domestic helper; and living in a house close to the office.
