ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the methodology and measurement used for Project 3535. Project 3535 is one of the only large-scale cross-cultural research endeavors to focus specifically on the work-family (W-F) interface. There is agreement among all four of these culturalist classification systems that Australia, Canada, and the United States belong in the Anglo cluster. The data collection was conducted in three phases. The first phase consisted of a social policy analysis. The second phase consisted of the collection of qualitative data. In the third phase, quantitative survey data were collected. Even once the modifications had been made the following variables did not meet the criteria for weak measurement equivalence/invariance (ME/I): ease of balancing, job and family control, job and family involvement, vertical individualism, horizontal individualism at home, horizontal collectivism at work, and time orientation. Relevant constructs were chosen based on the currently available literature and models pertaining to the W-F interface.
