ABSTRACT

It has been shown, in the preceding chapters, that research into the functions of the brain has failed, so far, to reveal their connection with mental activities ; and that, chiefly, because mind and intellect were considered identical. In point offact, however, all mental manifestation has its origin in the emotions and instincts, which, so far, have been practically neglected, or, at least, not considered to be functions of the cortex of the brain. Now, the brain is, primarily, an organ for the preservation of life ; and to this end a number of instincts are needed.
