ABSTRACT

In the United States and around the world, the nature of faculty work is changing. Faculty appointments are in flux, with many institutions shifting the balance away from permanent faculty appointments to part-time arrangements, compelling equally dramatic shifts in faculty roles and rewards. As well, attendance in higher education is increasing worldwide, and faculty members must effectively address the needs of an increasingly diverse student body in terms of class, race, gender, etc. Technological advancements in and outside of the classroom also are compelling faculty to integrate technology into traditional teaching and learning environments-and to develop educational delivery in new formats and with a range of technology tools-in order to respond to global demands for a highly creative and skilled workforce.
