ABSTRACT

The limited rehearsal period for a Play Reading must be used effectively. Technical elements such as lighting and sound cues should be limited. Actors need a one-hour break at minimum between the end of rehearsal and the start of the Reading. If the director is using light or sound, time must be allotted to incorporate these elements with the actors either during the stop-and-go or after the rehearsal and before the break. Clip-on music stand lights are used for some Readings. Unless they were incorporated in rehearsal, they should be tested before the Reading to be sure they provide enough light. Directors should determine who will turn on each light and when. The easiest option is for the director or stage manager to turn on all the music stand lights before the audience enters or for the first actor at each stand to turn on the light. Internal light cues take time to 'tech'. Blackouts are not required for Readings.
