ABSTRACT

Working within the time restrictions is the most significant challenge for the creative team involved with a Play Reading. While short rehearsal periods are common with many full productions, using time purposefully is mandatory with Play Readings. The playwright and director should discuss the play before rehearsals begin. As always, in-person discussions are best, but Skype or telephone conversations are effective alternatives. Email exchanges are less suitable for this type of exchange. There is no limit to the amount of time the playwright and director can spend on the play in the weeks preceding rehearsal, but at least one detailed discussion is necessary. The author communicates with the playwrights via email until he gets to the KCACT Region VII Festival, and then continues the discussions there. If he has any questions about the play, he asks in advance. He also asks playwrights what they most need to get out of hearing the play.
