ABSTRACT

With a particular focus on the situation in the Indo-Pacifi c region, there are only two remaining major players on the global maritime ‘chessboard’ today, the United States and the People’s Republic of China. While lessons can be drawn regarding the importance of sea power by examining strategic considerations and goals at a theoretical level – Mahan 1 and Corbett 2 and all of the more modern points of view – the operational feasibility of all strategic requirements, as seen below, poses quite diff erent demands on the political, military, arms industry and technological capabilities of any particular state.
