ABSTRACT

This chapter has two main purposes: to discuss the accessibility of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) in Portugal; and to compare the repertoire of citizenship rights actualized by in vitro fertilization (IVF) couples in their decisions to donate embryos for scientific research or to other couples, with the ones being constructed through legislation about gamete and embryo donation. It shows that while the law reinforces ideas of “natural families” as well as a geneticized notion of identity, in gamete and embryo donation couples give more emphasis to social ties and religious beliefs when justifying decisions around the fates of embryos.
