ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses moral realism against the variety of antirealist theories that are popular within contemporary Christian ethics. It also argues that commonsense morality is the theory of ethical intuitionism. The book examines an evolutionary theory of morality, which focuses on the role of emotions in morality, in order to explore the relation between emotions and morality. It explores a Ludwig Wittgenstein form of moral realism that is popular among some contemporary religious ethicists. The book then discusses the rise of ethical naturalism in the fields of the natural sciences and moral philosophy. It provides an introduction to intuitionism, placing intuitionism within the wider context of the commonsense philosophical tradition. Finally, the chapter elucidates that commonsense morality is not only compatible with Christian morality but also integral to Christian morality.
