ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains that speak, listen and learn consists of a graduated series of class and group activities which uses persuasive and presentational speech, dialogue and debate to improve self-confidence, self-esteem, the command and use of English and the motivation to learn, all of which can lead to improved levels of school achievement. It also discusses that materials were developed and tested in primary schools in the UK and overseas during a four-year period by over 3,000 children and their teachers. They are presented in the form of individual teacher worksheets, each of which can be used as the basis for a single class lesson. The learning objectives are listed, together with guidance on the preparation and organisation required detailed guidelines for carrying out the activity, and follow-up suggestions.
