ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the preparation for the public-speaking competition with a unit of literacy work related to debate and persuasive writing. It also focuses on school issues to give the children a secure platform which all could access. By this time most of them were confident with constructing arguments and using appropriate language. Many children who had lacked confidence at the beginning of the year were keen to have a go at the chair or speaker. Only a few were confident at constructing pertinent questions. The chapter describes that as a tool to focus the teacher the book is very valuable. It works in a logical fashion to develop and practice public-speaking skills, and the materials and preparation are minimal. It can be incorporated in all literacy and many other curriculum areas, history historical characters, why they might have acted as they did, science describing an investigation with findings, a good one for questioning, geography especially environmental issues.
