ABSTRACT

§ 1. The topic selected for this contribution could be an adequate homage to Prof. Bollée, since he illustrates with such brightness the German guruparamparā of scholars who did extensive work on the Śvetāmbara branch of canonical literature known as Chedasūtras, walking along the path initiated by Ernst Leumann (1859–1931) and Walther Schubring (1881–1969). In France, this tree produced an offshoot with the works of Colette Caillat (1921–2007), a student of Schubring, whose Atonements in the Ancient Ritual of the Jaina Monks (1965, 1975) has become a classic. In India, work in this area has been the apanage of Jain mendicants, who have provided editions of texts and commentaries: Muni Caturvijaya and Muni Puṇyavijaya have been the pioneers with their edition of the Bṛhatkalpabhāṣya (1933ff.); Muni Jinavijaya has published the Jītakalpasūtra (1926). Today Ācārya Vijayamunicandrasūri follows this line, providing re-editions (2010), whereas Samaṇī Kusumpragyā of the Terāpanth has made an extremely significant contribution with editions (VyavBh (K) 1996) and Hindi translations (JKBh (K) 2010).
