ABSTRACT

This chapter includes a step-by-step guide to the implementation of the Savant Skill Curriculum through the journey of one child, who participated in the study: from referral and identification, through to the final evaluation. Teaching priorities and activities were designed to facilitate the functional application of Jeremy's individual savant skills, incorporating successful and evidence-based strategies currently used in both gifted and autism education. Jeremy's placement in a satellite class located in a mainstream school, his journey through the Curriculum provides a model of support for mainstream teachers of autistic savants. Jeremy was reported by both his teacher and parents as displaying the following savant or splinter skills, along with their associated ratings: memory; hyperlexic; mechanical/spatial skills; and music. His Individual Savant Skill Program served as working documents for his family and teachers and was presented at his Individual Annual Education Plan meeting.
