ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. This book argues that reflective practice (RP) is an important element in learning to be a competent teacher. It reviews important literature and ideas related to reflective practice, and presents some critical positions with regard to the nature and status of RP. The book concentrates on pre-service teaching contexts and provides different perspectives on in-service teacher education. It looks at the role of reflective practice beyond formal education and in continuing professional development (CPD) contexts and focuses on the medium of reflection. The book investigates aspects of written reflection and considers aspects of spoken reflection. It provides two different positions on reflection and research. The book considers practitioner research and presents an agenda for further research into RP and also shows how teacher educators encourage and foster RP.
