ABSTRACT

Backgrounds are an important part of sound effects. They are the general ambience sounds that are added to the sound mix to give the location realism. Backgrounds are also referred to as BGs, ambiences or atmospheres. Backgrounds are the foundation on which all the other sound effects are placed. It is best to start our sound effects editing with backgrounds so we can build the sounds of the scene in a way that helps tell the story and define the characters. The most important part of spotting the film for backgrounds is to determine what scenes need background recordings and what those recordings will be. A good non-directional condenser microphone will work very well for backgrounds. It's important to record the ambience or background at a usable level. If the level is approaching –40dB, it's too low and will not normally yield an acceptable sound.
