ABSTRACT

Mixing is an art form, just like story-telling. All the separate sound elements are blended together and condensed down into a creative whole that works in congress with the visuals to tell an engaging story. In New York City it's common to have a single rerecording mixer and sometimes two. In a two-person team, the lead mixer will take the dialogue and Automated Dialogue Replacement and may take the music, while the second mixer will take the sound effects and Foley. A larger film mixing stage will be calibrated at the Dolby standard of 85dB SPL for the three front speakers. Cue sheets were commonly used before people started using the monitor on Digital Audio Workstations to view what sounds were coming up in the mix. Cue sheets were printed maps of what sounds were located on which tracks.
