ABSTRACT

There are a couple of ways of defining the term sound design. It is commonly used to refer to the creation of a sound for a creature, alien, monster, spacecraft or other thing that humans may never have encountered before. The term sound editor refers to someone who edits pre-recorded sounds and a sound designer is someone who creates new sounds by recording, editing and manipulating sounds. Sound design is used to subconsciously manipulate an audience into having an emotional response to the film's story. The term sound design was conceived by Francis Ford Coppola as an appropriate film credit for the sound work created by Walter Murch for the film, Apocalypse Now, 1979. Sound design is commonly used for special sounds created for a specific machine, creature or event. A good example of this type of sound design is the shower scene in the remake of the movie Psycho, 1998.
