ABSTRACT

Production sound effects are the sound effects that were recorded during the production of the film. Sound effects recorded wild on location can be hard effects or they can be ambiences. Wild sounds are recorded without a picture. Foley sound effects are those that are created by Foley artists in synchronization with the picture. Sound frequencies below 20Hz are referred to as infrasound and those frequencies above the 20,000Hz level are called ultrasound. The most common type of microphone used to record sound effects is a mono shotgun. Sometimes we may want to record a sound in stereo and if it's a background may want to record it in surround sound. The location sound recordist will have kept a daily sound report of all the sounds and takes that were recorded for the film. Editing sound effects is different than editing all the other sounds that are in a film. Layering is one very useful aspect of the editing of sound effects.
