ABSTRACT

The story of Alexander’s meeting with the queen of the Amazons is one of the better-known episodes of his Asian expedition. It tells of the queen’s arrival with an Amazonian guard at his camp in Hyrcania, where she asked to sleep with him in order to bear the child prodigy that would result from their union. For thirteen days Alexander dutifully obliged, and then she returned home. Except for Justin (2.4.33), all sources lose interest in the queen after her departure.
