ABSTRACT

There are three types of nouns in North Sámi: even-syllable (also known as vowel-stem), odd-syllable (also known as consonant-stem), and contracted. Note that these patterns sometimes include adjectives. Each type of noun inflects (i.e. changes its form) differently. North Sámi nouns inflect in seven different cases, in the singular and in the plural. The basic case endings are as follows; see section 3.2 for examples of each case.
