ABSTRACT

As life has become more complicated, and the chain of responsibility from manufacturer to consumer, so consumer law has had to cover this relationship in more detail. There are three basic principles underlying consumer law in the United Kingdom. First, there is a contract between buyer and seller. Secondly, whatever you are going to buy has to be accurately described: size, amount, colour. Thirdly, it must be safe. As far as consumers are concerned, the major civil laws are the Sale of Goods Act 1979 which incorporates the Supply of Goods Act 1973. An exhibition can be organized around the theme of consumer law in operation. Examples include labels from food, clothing and toiletries, as well as advertisements making specific claims for products, travel brochures, and newspaper cuttings on prosecutions over consumer laws. The Office of Fair Trading produces a series of attractive and informative leaflets on the Codes of Practice introduced under the Fair Trading Act.
