ABSTRACT

The consumer society is based on a growing demand for energy in the form of transport, fuel, heat and power to drive machinery in the home as well as power to drive the machinery which makes those consumer goods. Improvements in technology are required to avoid environmental pollution from the fumes emitted by burning household waste, but at a time when we are becoming conscious of using up finite resources, here is a way of using up an almost constantly renewable source of fuel. Local authorities have adopted different waste collection and recycling systems: in Newcastle upon Tyne tin cans are removed from household waste, converted back into steel and tin, and sold for reuse. Waste management and energy conservation are still in the early stages, yet they have an essential part of consumer education, of a genuine consumer responsibility for the future.
