ABSTRACT

When I was a newly qualified teacher I was lucky enough to be offered a job in a special school working with young people who had wide ranging additional educational needs. This wonderful experience started me on a long and fulfilling career within education. Working with all children is an enriching experience, but in my view working with children and adults who have additional needs is particularly gratifying. I am quite old now (55 as I write this chapter), and my journey through work has taken me from special schools, to mainstream inclusive educational settings; from early years to higher education. As I progressed on the journey, I chose to specialise within the field of SpLD/dyslexia. In return to my showing enthusiasm and commitment to additional needs, inclusion and equality; the most exciting learning experiences came to me. Hopefully this is a journey you also want to undertake and will find this chapter useful. I am sure that the first question in your mind is what is dyslexia? And what on earth is SpLD?
