ABSTRACT

The Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 (the Act) created the National Organic Program (NOP) that provides certification for the marketing of products that are organically produced. The definition of sustainable agriculture does not make a distinction between conventional and organic agriculture. Sustainable agriculture is not limited to certified organic or small-scale agriculture. The remainder of this chapter is devoted to examining some of those regulations and laws. There are several types of tax relief available to farms. Farmers in local and urban agriculture face unique marketing challenges. Farm stands may be prohibited by zoning, traffic control, or other regulations. Farmers engaged in local and urban agriculture often use nontraditional labor arrangements. Fair trade is a social movement. It consists of several loosely associated organizations that are located primarily in Europe and the United States. Fair trade Certified products are certified under private standards. Compliance with the standards is enforced through private contractual arrangements.
