ABSTRACT

There is no sharp distinction between conservation and environmental law. Conservation efforts are considerably older than modern federal environmental law. Participation in conservation programs tends to be voluntary whereas compliance with environmental law is not. The conservation programs administered by USDA are discussed in Chapter 24 and are not repeated here. There are numerous conservation programs under state law. The most important of these are discussed in this chapter. The remainder of the chapter is devoted to the major federal environmental laws that apply to agriculture and forestry.
