ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 examines the challenges faced by the Gulf States following Britain’s formal military and political withdrawal in 1971. Such episodes as the attempted coup in Sharjah and the seizure of power by Sheikh Khalifah bin Hamid in Qatar are highlighted. The chapter also emphasizes that despite the end of formal empire British policy-makers were convinced of the necessity of maintaining strong links with these territories for economic and strategic reasons.
