ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 investigates the new pressures to which the Gulf States were subjected, especially from the Arab world which sought to use their oil wealth for political reasons. The wielding of the ‘oil weapon’ at the time of the 1973 Arab–Israeli conflict demonstrated that British efforts to influence the Gulf States and preserve interests were threatened as never before.
