ABSTRACT
Chapter 5 explores the effects of regional developments, especially the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the outbreak of the Iran–Iraq war, on the Gulf States. It also studies the ways in which these dramatic events provided Britain with an opportunity to strengthen its ties with these territories, especially in the military field.
