ABSTRACT

Tamil Nadu is situated in the southeastern region of the Indian peninsula, bordered by the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh (AP) on the north, by the Indian Ocean on the south, by the Bay of Bengal in the east and by the state of Kerala in the west. With a coastal length of 922 km and a land boundary of 1,200 km, it lies between 8° 5' and 13° 35' of northern latitude and 76° 15' and 80° 20' of eastern longitude comprising 12.97 million hectares (m ha). The climate of Tamil Nadu is tropical. The mean annual temperature is 28.2°C in the plains and 15.2°C in the hills. The mean annual precipitation is 848 mm in the inland plains, 946 mm in the coastal plains, and 1666 mm in the hilly regions.
