ABSTRACT

Gool Pestonji Kapadia qualified as a nurse at the King Edward Memorial (KEM) hospital in Bombay in 1937. After working as a staff nurse, she took her Sister Tutor's diploma at the Lady Reading Health School in Delhi. Kapadia colleague and friend of many years, Alice Zachariah, an eminent nursing leader who worked in Andhra Pradesh, remembered their time together as students in Delhi. She was sponsored to study in London for her diploma in nursing administration. Later, the UP government selected Kapadia as the national counterpart to the World Health Organization's (WHO) nursing representative in the state, and in 1957 she was appointed as the Superintendent of Nursing Services. Kapadia was a member of the trained nurses' association of India (TNAI) Council from 1947-74 and President of the UP State branch, as well as chair of the TNAI's education section and economic welfare committee.
