ABSTRACT

This chapter depicts the scenario of water resources in Bhutan in the context of well-being and gender. Water is one of the most important natural resources and Bhutanese people attribute their Gross National Happiness (GNH) to their virgin, natural environment from where abundant clean water flows. Adoption of the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management and good international practices have been advocated as a model for managing water resources sustainably, efficiently and more holistically. Environment is one of the main pillars of GNH and through its commitment Bhutan has maintained an enviable record in this sphere among many nations globally. With the democratization of the Bhutanese governance system, GNH has become vital to develop conscious intellectual thought and ethics and imagination among the Bhutanese. The long-term prospect for society to reach this goal of responsible well-being will depend on their ability to set limits to their life's projects according to the four principles of: livelihood security, sustainability, equity, and capabilities.
