ABSTRACT
My journey as a student of entrepreneurship differs from many traditional academics and business school professors with an interest in innovation, entrepreneurship and the phenomenon of startup enterprises. As a woman born in 1942, I received mixed messages about what to be when I grew up. I encountered significant barriers to my intellectual and career development. However, I was also the beneficiary of some unique opportunities to pioneer new territory, in particular in helping to build what is today one of Americas great research universities, UC San Diego, and, with that, contribute to the evolution of what today is one of America’s most dynamic innovation economies, San Diego, California.
