Marx and the Materialist Tradition in Indian Philosophy

The title of the essay may sound odd to some, for Marx, in spite of his encyclopedic learning, was not at all conversant with the Indian philosophical tradition. He followed the events in India before and after the Sepoy Mutiny (1857); his articles published in the New-York Daily Tribune in 1853 and other writings bear testimony to that (Marx and Engels 1953; Marx and Engels 1968a).
