ABSTRACT

The digital age has made the world smaller in terms of time and distance, but it has also made the world richer in terms of the potential for deeper understanding. Migration, economic globalization, and technology will continue to alter the landscape of the theatre throughout the world. The future of world theatre then involves questions about the very nature of theatre and about the use and preservation of unique cultural practices. Technology will not erase theatre. It will be employed in the theatre to varying degrees for a wide range of reasons. Social media has also played a role in political activism and the theatre that springs from the push for social change. Much has been made of the use of social media in what has been called the Arab Spring. Political upheaval escalated in the Arab world beginning in 2010 in Tunisia.
