Both bedrooms and bathrooms were recent place additions to the house plan. In historic times, people originally slept in the great hall of a castle or in a one-room house on a bed of hay. The earliest houses in North America contained a single room where the whole family slept together, often in the same bed. Once the center hall plan house had a second story-the parents’ room was often located on the first floor with a room for children upstairs. The idea of separate bedrooms for each of the children and a separate master bedroom was a relatively recent phenomenon in the history of dwellings.
