ABSTRACT

In stylistics there is a natural overlap between the concerns of the linguist and those of the literary critic. But there need not be any conict between the two: the linguist’s task is primarily to explain and quantify how a particular stylistic eect takes place, while value judgements are left to the critic’s sensitivity (see Chatman, 1971 xiv-xv; and more particularly Halliday 1971: 358-60).
